Sand and Sorcery
“Alatruk ain’t such a bad place, we’ve got deep wells, decent food, strong walls and tough guards. But it does make a man a mite nervous to see them raider campfires dotting the ridge. Th’town must look like a big fat Crodlu steak to ’em” – Thek, Free Mul laborer
The Balican Merchant dynasty of House Wavir sponsor this fortified town of about two thousand souls at any given time. House Wavir, having amassed wealth in tolls to pay the city guards enough to keep them loyal, is unquestionably in charge. Desperate raiders wait in ambush in the stony barrens and rocky badlands that surround the village, but the Mercenary guard drives off any bandits who come within half a day’s travel of the town gates. Still, small campfires dot the rocky landscape, and any Dune trader worth his water knows that to travel without an armed escort is to invite certain death.
The village is governed by a Balican Noble named Ariphistaneles, known for being tough but fair.
